The Seattle Atatürk Unity Run offers 5K and 10K races starting at Gas Works Park in Seattle. The primary courses follow the Burke-Gilman Trail adjacent to Lake Union. This event is presented by TACAWA and commemorates Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, integrating the run with a Turkish civic holiday honoring Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the movement that formed modern Turkey. The event features a Kids Dash for children aged 5 and under, virtual 5K and 10K race options, and a Sip N Stroll for those preferring a community atmosphere over competitive racing. Youth are a key focus, with reduced entry fees for ages 6 to 21. The theme reflects Atatürk’s principles regarding young people, democracy, equality, science, reason, and community. The event welcomes runners, walkers, families, and individuals seeking cross-cultural connections, not exclusively competitive athletes.
Running: Locals run Green Lake, Lake Union, Seward Park, the Arboretum, and the Burke-Gilman Trail when they want clean base miles without thinking too hard. The Burke-Gilman Trail carries long runs north, and the Ballard Fred Meyer to Woodinville line gives runners 20-22 miles with no real hills. Eastside Runners Club covers Wednesday Night Track Workouts, Thursday Night Redmond Runs, Saturday Morning Runs, and summer Tuesday Trail Runs. Fleet Feet Tacoma Run Club meets every Monday at 6 pm for a 3-5 mile run. Bel-Red Run Club gives the Eastside another steady meetup. Run for Donuts, Seattle Ataturk Unity Run, Rock-N-Roll Marathon, and Unity Loop 5K sit on the anchor race list.
Cycling: Riders use Lake Washington Boulevard, Mercer Island Loop, Burke-Gilman Trail, and the North Lake Washington Trail Loop for dependable Z2 and faster group miles. The North Lake Washington Trail Loop runs a shade over 32 miles and gives riders a little over 600 feet of total climbing, which is about as flat as this glacier-carved region gets. The Juanita Compact Hillclimb packs 5 climbs over 400 feet of vertical gain into about 18 miles. Magnolia, Queen Anne, 520 through Yarrow, Hunts, and Evergreen Points bring the punchy work. Cascade Bicycle Club runs Free Group Rides 365 days a year and anchors Seattle to Portland. Marymoor Park brings Friday Night Racing all summer.
Season: May and October feel like local sweet spots when trails are wet enough to be grippy and the road miles still stack up. July and August bring the driest conditions, and the driest days in Seattle usually land between July 15th and August 15th. Summer west of the Cascades is generally good, and riders keep crit legs sharp at Marymoor while runners build long steady loops around Lake Washington, Lake Union, and the river trails. Winter turns the plan wetter, so locals shift toward paved paths, wet singletrack that holds up, and practical intervals. Tiger Mountain and Duthie Hill can still ride well in the wet, while higher mountain trails may not thaw until June.
