Isle of Palms Connector Run and Walk for the Child
SAT OCT 3
The Isle of Palms Connector Run and Walk for the Child is held on the first Saturday in October on the South Carolina coast. The race uses the IOP Connector between Isle of Palms and Mount Pleasant. It includes a 10K, 5K, and Family Fun Run, attracting serious runners, casual walkers, teams, families, and participants of various ages and experience levels. The event supports Lowcountry children, directing all funds to local organizations focused on child abuse prevention and aiding recovery for abuse survivors. The 5K and 10K begin on Isle of Palms, cross the connector to Mount Pleasant, and return to the island. The course offers views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, creeks, marsh, and waterfowl. Following the race, a family festival takes place, featuring live music, a kids' area, vendor exhibits, cash prizes, awards, and free beer for adults 21 and older. For over thirty years, the event has contributed more than $1.386 million to local nonprofits, such as Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center, Windwood Farm & Family Services, and HALOS.
Summerville Sweet Tea Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K
SAT NOV 7
The Summerville Sweet Tea Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K begins at 200 South Main Street in downtown Summerville, South Carolina. All three distances start at 7:00 AM Eastern. Participants can select from 13.1 miles, 6.2 miles, or 3.1 miles, allowing half marathoners, 10K runners, and 5K participants to run on the same race morning. The course starts downtown, moves onto a recreational path, goes through residential areas, and circles back downtown to finish. A distinctive feature is the finish line, which includes the World's Largest Sweet Tea. Live entertainment and water stations are available along the route. Afterward, runners can vote for their preferred entertainment and the most spirited aid station. Half marathoners must reach Newington Neighborhood within 90 minutes and complete the race within 3 hours 30 minutes. 10K runners must pass James Allan Park within 90 minutes and finish within 2 hours 30 minutes.
Cooper River Bridge Run
SAT APR 3
The Cooper River Bridge Run is a one-way 10K from Mount Pleasant into Charleston, South Carolina, using the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge as the centerpiece. It is typically held on the first Saturday in April and attracts one of the largest 10K fields in the United States. It is also South Carolina’s only USA Track and Field-sanctioned elite competition, meaning the event that includes local runners and charity teams also draws serious international speed. The race originated from a local effort to encourage activity in the Charleston area, and its first edition was less refined than today's event: the course was shortened after the start, water stops were absent, many runners withdrew, and some required medical attention because of the heat. The route initially began at Patriots Point and concluded at White Point Gardens, with later versions moving the finish closer to the College of Charleston. A cannon fires to start the race, referencing Charleston’s military history, and Kenyan runners have been a dominant presence at the front for decades. Modern arrangements include packet pickup, mailing options, and bus and boat transport for participants.
