14th Annual Captain James R. Minicozzi Memorial Race 2026

The Captain James R. Minicozzi Memorial Race is a 5K run and 1-mile walk in Downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania. It takes place annually on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, coinciding with La Festa Italiana. Both events begin in the morning on North Washington Avenue, offering participants a short community race linked to the festival. The race honors Cpt. James R. Minicozzi and supports two local causes: the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania Children’s Christmas Party and college scholarships at West Scranton High School, his former school. The 5K course features a water stop around the halfway point near Andy Gavin’s on North Washington Avenue. Dickson City Hyundai provides a lead vehicle. Awards extend beyond overall winners, recognizing top male and female finishers in age groups from youth to 71-plus. Trophies and bonus prizes are given to the top male and female walkers. A special Armed Service Award is presented to the top 5K finisher who is an active service member or veteran. Proceeds contribute to hosting over 200 children at the Boys & Girls Clubs Christmas party and funding two West Scranton High School scholarships.
