About this race
The Race for Rare 5k Run/Walk takes place at Lake Shawnee in Topeka, Kansas. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m., with the race beginning at 9:00 a.m. Participants can choose between a 5K run/walk, a 1-mile walk, or a virtual option, accommodating those who are not competitive runners. This event supports the PPP3CA Hope Foundation, a parent-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to funding PPP3CA rare disease research and assisting affected families.
The PPP3CA condition can lead to neurodevelopmental disabilities, including drug-resistant epilepsy. This event aims to raise funds and awareness for children with this condition. The gathering at Lake Shawnee features a complimentary pancake bar, water, drinks from the Chaos Coffee Truck (available for purchase), raffles, and children's activities like bubbles, wristbands, face painting, and participant medals. The 5K is untimed, yet medals are awarded to various age groups from 0-6 to 60 and older. Additional awards include those for the eldest runner, best overall male and female, and Claire’s Courage Award: The Bravest Stripes.
