About this race
The Buffalo Creek Half Marathon is a point-to-point trail race held annually on the third Saturday of October in southeast Butler County, Pennsylvania. It begins in Cabot and proceeds along a long, gradual downhill path toward Freeport, primarily on the crushed limestone of the Butler-Freeport Community Trail. The event typically attracts several hundred participants, and its consistent net elevation loss makes it a suitable choice for runners aiming for a quick half marathon or a personal record.
The route incorporates paved roads for the initial 1.5 miles and the final 0.5 miles, with the intervening sections on a rails-to-trails path constructed on the former Western Pennsylvania Railroad bed. Participants conclude the race at the trail's southern terminus, near former Butler Junction, beneath the Highway 356 bridge spanning the Allegheny River. This event serves as the primary fundraiser for the Butler Freeport Community Trail Council, an entirely volunteer-run nonprofit organization responsible for the upkeep of the approximately 15-mile trail system located within an hour's drive of Pittsburgh.
