About this race

Colossal-Vail 50/50 begins and ends at Colossal Cave Mountain Park, near Vail, approximately 24 miles southeast of Tucson. This high desert trail race utilizes sections of the Arizona Trail, offering 50-mile and 55K ultra distances, along with a half marathon. The event was established in 2014, and the 50-mile race also serves as the opening event for the three-race Southern Arizona Triple 50 series. The course follows parts of the Arizona National Scenic Trail between Saguaro National Park and the Santa Rita Mountains foothills. Tucson Trail Runners developed the course to be a fairly quick trail ultra, featuring rolling, gentle terrain, well-maintained trails, and expansive desert vistas. This layout suits both novice ultra runners and seasoned participants seeking a straightforward race. Entrants in the 50-mile race have the option to finish at the 50K point and still be credited with completing that distance. Aid stations are supplied, emergency communications are integrated into the race plan, all finishers get a laser-engraved memento, and the race operates without disposable cups, requiring participants to use their own reusable cup.
