About this race

The Crazy Desert Trail Race takes runners through San Angelo State Park in West Texas, offering distances from a 5K to a 100K. This spring trail race provides a variety of options: 5K, 10K, half marathon, 25K, marathon, 50K, and 100K. The longer distances qualify it as an ultramarathon, while the shorter distances allow local and newer trail runners to participate over the same weekend without committing to an all-day effort. The course crosses desert terrain within the park, featuring cactus fields, rocky hills, and a finish line beside a creek. San Angelo State Park also includes fast desert trails, Permian-era tracks, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Longhorn herd. Aid stations, staffed by volunteers, are positioned approximately every 4 to 5 miles, and the 100K has a 24-hour time limit. The San Angelo Road Lizards, a volunteer-run nonprofit running club founded in 1982 to promote running in the San Angelo area, hosts the race. The club maintains unusually low costs for an ultra event, directing sponsor funds toward reduced registration fees. Crazy Desert is also a stop on the Trail Racing Over Texas series, attracting runners competing in that circuit as well as locals seeking a challenging desert trail run.
