About this race
This circumnavigation of Pine Creek, known as "The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania" or "The River of Pines," forms the basis of an ultra-running challenge across some of Pennsylvania’s wildest footpaths. The course covers sections of the Mid State Trail, the Black Forest Trail—called "the crown jewel of Pennsylvania’s long distance hiking trails"—and the West Rim Trail. This event, established in 2014, is not intended as an introductory ultramarathon.
Expect 103 miles of rocky terrain with 20,000ft of elevation gain, including numerous climbs and descents of 900-1200 feet. Runners will cross Pine Creek via a former railroad trestle, reach Ramsey Bend Vista, and climb Gillespie Point, referred to as "The Matterhorn of the Alleghenies." The route, consisting of single track and old logging roads, requires substantial prior trail experience; it has seen an average finish rate of 49%. Participants can select between Supported and Unsupported categories, with specific regulations for unsupported runners concerning crew access and spectators.
