About this race
The New York City Marathon begins on Staten Island at the base of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, sending over 52,000 runners across the city on the first Sunday in November. It is the world's largest marathon, drawing participants from approximately 140 countries. The field includes elite professionals, competitive club runners, charity participants, recreational runners, and individuals running their first marathon.
The course crosses Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx before concluding in Manhattan. This route offers a dynamic cross-section of New York City, distinct from a contained park circuit. Over one million spectators line the streets, with millions more viewing the broadcast in 170 countries and territories. The event originated with 127 entrants and 55 finishers on a Central Park loop, later expanding to a five-borough course. Since its inception, more than 1.2 million people have completed the race.
