About this race
The Grand Blue Mile is a one-mile street race in Downtown Des Moines, Iowa, using Western Gateway Park as its location. Held annually since 2010 and presented by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, it takes place during Drake Relays week, offering everyday runners a short, fast downtown race on the same schedule as serious competition. Over 50,000 people have participated since its inception, with runners coming from 47 states, six countries, and four continents. The main mile features competitive and recreational divisions for adults, teens, and children 12 and under, along with a virtual option.
The event accommodates a diverse group of participants: elite athletes, national champions, club runners, casual runners, families, and children are all included. The course runs through downtown streets, with related events on Grand Avenue and a finish on World Record Way. Spike's Sprint offers children ages 2 to 10 their own short race and a Bulldog plush at the finish. The Bulldog Double challenges runners who complete both the Drake Road Races and the Grand Blue Mile, while the Family Fun Zone provides bounce houses, face painting, a DJ, and balloon artists. A Mascot Madness Challenge also occurs, where local mascots race 100 meters and receive oversized medals.
