About this race

The Harriet Lock Memorial Mile/Duck Island Summer Mile is a summer mile race series held on Iona Island, a 556-acre island in the Hudson River near Stony Point, New York. It is located within Bear Mountain State Park. The island's separation from the west bank by mudflats and freshwater tidal marshes gives the race a more secluded atmosphere compared to a typical road mile. The island is accessible via a causeway from U.S. Route 9W. The surrounding environment, including marshland, the river, a bird sanctuary, and a winter nesting area for bald eagles, significantly shapes the race's character. Iona Island also possesses considerable historical significance for a small race venue. Native Americans referred to it as Wa-na-ka-wagh-kin, meaning "good land." British forces occupied the island during the American Revolution, and it later functioned as a naval ammunition depot for many years.
