About this race

The Houston Marathon begins downtown near Daikin Park, launching a large January field through the city alongside a half marathon and a 5K. It has been held annually since 1972 and stands as Houston's largest single-day sporting event, drawing close to half a million spectators along the routes. The full and half marathons together have a capped entry of 27,000 participants, divided equally between the two races, with the marathon having a six-hour completion limit. The course is known for being fast, flat, USATF certified, and favored by runners aiming for Boston Marathon qualifying times. Participants will pass through Houston Heights, Neartown, Hermann Park, Rice University, Uptown, Memorial Park, and Allen Parkway before concluding at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The inaugural race was significantly smaller, featuring 113 runners, approximately 200 spectators, a five-mile loop course, and beef stew served afterward. The event has also served as a venue for national championship races, women's Olympic Trials, USATF half marathon championships, and a U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials weekend; George W. Bush completed it at age 46 in 3:44:52.
