About this race
The Hot August Night Trail Race is a night trail run held in the Citrus Tract of the Withlacoochee Forest. It begins and ends at Holder Mine in Inverness, Florida. Participants can select from 5-mile, 10-mile, or 20-mile distances. The 20-mile race commences earlier than the shorter options, utilizing two 10-mile circuits. A headlamp or flashlight is mandatory for all participants. The course officially closes at 11:00 pm, emphasizing a run conducted after dark rather than one concluding near sunset.
The course consists entirely of single-track trail, featuring packed sand and pine needles underfoot, winding through woods with gradual ascents and descents rather than significant climbs. Reflective markers and glow sticks guide the path, and runners cross the timing mat after completing each loop. The 5-mile loop includes a hydration station at approximately 2.4 miles, with aid available at the finish line and a post-race picnic. While bright colors and creative attire are encouraged, adding a playful element, the fundamental challenge remains: navigating narrow forest trails by light during a summer evening. A1 Ultra Events, directed by Andy and Amy Mathews, is the organizer, having hosted trail events for the local running community since 2018.
