John Colter Run
Saturday, September 19, 2026 · Three Forks, United States
Distances
12.1km
About this race
The John Colter Run begins at Missouri Headwaters State Park, south of Trident. A "ole 50 caliber Hawkins black powder rifle goes off" marks the start of a rugged trail run. The 7-mile course follows terrain reminiscent of the Lewis and Clark expedition, presenting a cross-country challenge.
Following an initial 1.5 miles on paved/gravel road, the route enters 5.5 miles of rugged trails, marked with "skulls, bones, and beer bottles." Runners encounter two water crossings. The first, under a railroad bridge, is mandatory, with mud potentially reaching the knee and water up to the waist. This section must be navigated to avoid disqualification. A Gallatin River crossing with a safety rope follows. After finishing, participants can enjoy a post-race barbeque with beer and live music, having completed an "extraordinary effort" that included chasing an in-race "John Colter" for prizes.
