About this race
The Josh Lee Memorial 5K Run takes place at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It honors Josh Lee, a former USC Upstate cross-country runner and scholar-athlete. This 5K is organized by USC Upstate athletics alongside Josh’s parents, Johnny and Laurie Lee, attracting over 250 participants annually. Proceeds benefit the Josh Lee Memorial Scholarship Fund, which aids USC Upstate’s cross country and track and field teams.
The race originated as part of the Mighty Moo Festival in Cowpens before relocating to the USC Upstate campus. Josh Lee passed away in a car accident during his time as a student-athlete. The scholarship established in his memory is presented each year to two student-athletes based on their academic achievements, athletic performance, and community involvement. Awards are given to the top overall finishers and winners in various age groups, ensuring the event includes both competitive runners and individuals participating to support Josh’s family, his teammates, and the USC Upstate program.
