About this race
The Kiwanis Independence 5K is a 5K run/walk held on the morning of July 4th in Charlottesville, Virginia. Participants begin at Hollymead Elementary School. The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville organizes the event, which has been a local holiday tradition since 1983. A virtual 5K option is available for those who prefer to complete the distance at their own pace. Proceeds from entry fees benefit the Salvation Army’s Camp Rappahannock, Central Little League, and Charlottesville Community Bikes. The race has contributed over $150,000 to charity across more than 40 years.
The in-person route is known as the Lakeside Course. It begins and concludes at Hollymead Elementary School, crossing neighborhood streets such as Powell Creek Drive, Shadybrook Trail, Turnberry Circle, English Oaks Circle, Kendalwood Lane, and Ashwood Boulevard, incorporating a brief trail segment. The event accommodates both runners and walkers, aligning with its holiday setting. Packet pickup is available at Lakeside Middle School prior to race day and on race morning. One long-time participant noted that the event has enhanced their Fourth of July celebrations over time.
