About this race
The Krug Castle Challenge is a castle-themed fundraiser held at Krug Park in Saint Joseph, Missouri. This city park features an Italian castle, rose gardens, a lagoon, trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, and an amphitheater. The race includes a Measly Mile, a Kinda 5k, and a 10k. Notably, the "Kinda 5k" consists of three loops totaling 4.08 miles. Participants run laps within the park on a 20-minute clock, completing each lap before starting the next. The standard 1 mile, 5k, and 10k races are not timed, aligning with the event's primary focus on fundraising.
The park's setting largely defines the race's character. Krug Park is Saint Joseph’s oldest park, with Henry Krug's original land donation intended for public use under specific restrictions against liquor and gambling. The course is equipped with lighting, and depending on the season, Christmas lights may be present. Runners are advised to bring a headlamp or body lamp if they anticipate being on the course after dark. Finishers of the 5k or 10k receive a commemorative medal, while those completing more than 10k can earn a challenge medal. The final participant remaining in the King, Queen, and Nonbinary categories is declared "Royalty," regardless of the number of laps completed. The majority of proceeds benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
