About this race
The Lake Norman Half Marathon Elf Classic takes place in early winter at Lake Norman State Park in North Carolina. It begins and ends at the Lake Norman Picnic Ground near the waterfront. This event serves as the cold-weather counterpart to the summer Lake Norman Forest Run. Offerings include a half marathon, 10K, 5K run/walk, 5K ruck, and a virtual option. The half marathon is 13.1 miles on asphalt park roads, with a 3-hour time limit, requiring participants to maintain approximately 13:44 per mile or faster.
The half marathon course winds through the southern peninsula of Lake Norman State Park, alongside North Carolina's largest manmade lake. The park itself features around 17 miles of shoreline. Participants include regular runners, 5K walkers, and ruck competitors carrying specified weights: 20 pounds for men and 10 pounds for women. The race benefits the Human Health Project, which provides grants to local food shelters. Participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item on race day. Half marathon finishers receive a hooded sweatshirt, while shorter-distance runners get a tech shirt. Ruck finishers can earn an Elf Classic patch or challenge coin, depending on their finish time.
