About this race

The Lavaman Triathlon takes place in late March on Hawai'i Island, starting at Waikoloa Beach Resort. The swim is in Anaeho'omalu Bay, the bike leg follows Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway, and the finish is on the beach within the resort. Established in 1998 by Gerry Rott, the race was created to offer a more accessible triathlon in Hawaii, without the need for championship qualification. The inaugural event saw 83 participants; the series now attracts thousands, from beginners seeking a welcoming first triathlon to seasoned athletes desiring a local Hawaii competition free from World Championship demands. The course begins in the bay, leads cyclists through lava fields on the highway, and concludes with a run back through Waikoloa to the sand. Lavaman maintains a significant local connection: it is locally owned and operated, with all net proceeds benefiting the community, and awards are crafted locally. The post-race gathering is integral to the event, featuring a beer garden, live music, and a beach BBQ beneath a coconut grove; it originated with two Kona Brewing kegs and now utilizes approximately 25. The associated LavaKids nonprofit aids youth sports on Hawaii Island, extending the event's impact beyond race weekend.
