About this race
LOWVELO is a Lowcountry charity cycling event centered on Isle of Palms and the Charleston area. The name merges “Lowcountry” with “velo,” the French term for bike. It takes place in November, generating funds for cancer research at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, South Carolina’s sole National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. All funds raised by participants are directed to cancer research, with riders agreeing to a fundraising minimum tied to their chosen distance.
The event provides five route choices: 7 and 14 miles suitable for all ages, 23 and 50 miles for participants aged 14 and older, and an 80-mile route for those 16 and older. The shorter routes on the island begin later in the morning, while the longer routes on the road start earlier. Individuals unable to participate in person can join Spin classes, stationary rides, or the virtual Home Team, which also accommodates cycling, walking, or running independently. The event unites riders, volunteers, sponsors, teams, families, and researchers, emphasizing remembrance of cancer survivors and those lost to the illness.
