About this race
The Mighty Mile in Flint is a free one-mile race for children ages 5 to 14, held on a summer evening at Carman Ainsworth Middle School. It is part of the Michigan Running Foundation Mighty Mile series, which offers youth races at several Michigan locations to encourage children to run and be active. The Flint event divides runners into four age-group races: 5 to 7, 8 to 9, 10 to 11, and 12 to 14. Girls and boys compete together in each age group, and registration is limited to the first 200 children.
The race begins and ends on the Carman Ainsworth Middle School track. Children run the first quarter-mile on the track, loop around the school grounds, then return for a final quarter-mile on the track, completing a mile course. The mile is measured for accuracy and timed with a disposable bib tag, with results available immediately and an option for parents to receive their child’s time via text. Every runner receives a T-shirt, backpack, and finisher medal; there are no awards, as the focus is on letting children challenge themselves. Parents may run alongside their child for support, and Carman Ainsworth High School track athletes line the course to encourage the participants.
