About this race
The Ocotillo Trail Endurance Challenge is a desert trail race held in Carlsbad, New Mexico. It begins at the upper parking lot of Southeastern New Mexico College. Rather than set distances, participants select a 1-hour, 4-hour, or 8-hour event, completing as many 2-mile loops as they can before their time concludes. All participants start at 8:00 am, with the shortest race ending after one hour and the longest option continuing until mid-afternoon.
The course follows Ocotillo Trail within the Chihuahuan Desert, south of the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, crossing State Park and city land. Each loop covers approximately 2 miles with about 229 feet of elevation gain, structured as an out-and-back. This design allows participants to accumulate distance while remaining close to support. The Carlsbad Roadrunners manage two aid stations, positioned at the halfway point and the base of the hill. The event welcomes runners, hikers, ruckers, walkers, and relay teams, offering a suitable format for those aiming for longer distances or an ultra on a consistent desert course.
