About this race
Run For Ollie is Ryan Ortiz's annual fundraising race streak, honoring his nephew Oliver "Ollie" Lynn Ortiz with at least one marathon each year. Ortiz has organized this event in various locations including Kansas City, Wichita, New York City, Tulsa, Chicago, Ottawa, and the Prairie Spirit Trail in Kansas, rather than a single, fixed race. The most significant event in its history was a 100-mile run on the Prairie Spirit Trail, commencing in Ottawa, proceeding south through small Kansas towns to Iola, and then returning along the same path. Ortiz completed this 100-mile distance in just over 25 hours.
Ollie passed away at 9 months old while in day care, and an employee was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder. Ortiz initiated his running to generate funds for Ollie's Toy Box, a foundation established by Ollie's parents, Rob and Kaylen Ortiz, which provides clothing, diapers, baby formula, toys, and other necessities to families. His initial marathon for Ollie yielded over $13,000, and his efforts have collectively raised approximately $25,000. Ortiz consistently wears blue during his runs for Ollie, accompanied by a blue-and-white band inscribed with "I run for Ollie." Towards the conclusion of his first marathon for Ollie, his wife presented him with a blue flag featuring Ollie's image and the hashtag "I Run For Ollie."
