About this race
The ORRRC Wingman 10K is a flat, paved 10K at EJ Nutter Park in Beavercreek, Ohio, starting at 8:30 a.m. The course follows the Creekside Trail. ORRRC established the race in 2014. Its entry structure maintains a local and accessible focus: current ORRRC members, military members and veterans, and children 14 and under participate for free. Non-members 15 and older pay a small fee. It is more than an individual race; runners and walkers are grouped into color teams, fostering camaraderie among participants who may start as strangers.
The race commemorates Joshua Shepherd, the best friend and "WingMan" of race director Eddie Weaver. Shepherd died in a B-52 crash off Guam alongside five other service members. This history shapes the race's focus on friendship, pursuing goals, and mutual support. Participants are randomly assigned to one of six color teams, with walkers placed in black or gray teams. Non-competitive options are available for those seeking a less pressured participation. Runners begin in staggered waves by age and sex to ensure a balanced team competition, though chip timing records individual race times. Awards are presented to the top 25 overall runners and to the first color teams (runner and walker) to have all members finish.
