The Reggie Oeltjen Douglas Trail 11-Mile Race begins at the Douglas Trailhead on County Highway 14 in Oronoco, Minnesota. Runners gather in Douglas prior to the morning start. This 11-mile race takes place on asphalt, following the Douglas Trail rail-trail which connects northwest Rochester and Pine Island.
The majority of the course is tree-lined, providing shade for most of the race. The event originated in 1976 and was later named in honor of Reggie Oeltjen, a dedicated Rochester Running Club member and volunteer. Oeltjen's personal challenge was to run across Minnesota from South Dakota to Wisconsin at the age of 65. Participants receive a race gift, and the finish includes refreshments, such as watermelon.
