About this race
The Run for Women is a women’s 5K road race in Albany, New York, typically held in late May or early June. Established in 1979, it evolved into a significant mass-participation event, previously drawing fields of 4,000 to 5,000 participants and earning IAAF Silver Label Road Race status. While the race now centers on the 5K, it originally included a 10K race, which served as the elite competition before the 5K assumed that position.
The present course begins on Washington Avenue near Albany City Hall, adjacent to the New York State Capitol. It proceeds into Washington Park before looping back to Washington Avenue for a swift downhill finish. The event has frequently hosted U.S. road championships, initially at the 10K distance and later at the 5K. Notable in its history is Lynn Jennings, who secured two 10K victories and six 5K wins, and Marla Runyan, a three-time consecutive national champion at this venue. Five women have competed in every edition since the race's inception, and participants still receive the race’s traditional bakery items: bread and a box of cookies.
