About this race
Sportsplex Tri for Kids is a youth triathlon held at the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center in Opelika, Alabama. It is designed for children, with the main Kids Triathlon catering to ages 5 to 15, and the Small Fry Tri offering a shorter event for ages 2 to 5. The competitive Kids Triathlon is USAT sanctioned, featuring divisions for ages 5-8, 9-11, and 12-15. Athletes compete in the age group corresponding to their age at the end of the race year.
The event takes place at the Sportsplex and its aquatics facilities, providing a controlled environment for young athletes to attempt the swim-bike-run format. Kids Triathlon participants require a USAT membership, whereas Small Fry racers do not. The race was initiated by Nicole Carter, Sarah Herren, and Kimberly Myers, and it received an Alabama Recreation and Parks Association award in its inaugural season. Nicole Carter directed the triathlon for numerous seasons before a new leadership team continued the event.
