The Derby 50k

About this race
The Derby 50K starts and finishes in front of the Derby Community Building near Ellerbe, North Carolina, and runs in late November. It is a 31.5-mile ultra on three loops of rolling hills, with asphalt and dirt underfoot and about 60% unpaved trail. The race keeps things deliberately simple: no prize money, no cutoff, and a no-frills setup that suits runners trying their first ultra as much as people who just want a long, quiet day out.
Runners go counter-clockwise and face traffic, because the roads are not closed. Yellow arrows painted on the highway mark turns and some straight sections, so paying attention is part of the job. Derby Road sits well out in the country, but cars still use it, and the race instructions make caution part of the experience. Camping is allowed on the community building grounds, which fits the low-key feel of an event that has been around since 2003.
