About this race
The Great River Challenge is an off-road triathlon held in Massachusetts' Upper Pioneer Valley, originating at Northfield Mountain Recreation Center. Participants swap the typical swim, road bike, and run for paddling, trail running, and mountain biking. This September event benefits the Northfield Kiwanis Foundation, directing funds to local children's and families' health, wellness, and youth initiatives.
The competition begins with a 5.5-mile paddle on the Connecticut River from the Quinnetukut boat launch, incorporating a circuit around Clarke’s Island, also known as Kidd Island and linked to tales of Captain William Kidd’s hidden riches. Following the river segment, competitors face a 4-mile trail run across the surrounding hills and valleys. The race concludes with a 7-mile mountain bike course utilizing the Northfield Mountain trail network. Individuals can compete alone or in teams, and a condensed option is available for those new to the paddle-run-bike structure. The event features professional timing, awards for various categories, and a distinct local history element that sets it apart from typical multisport races.
