About this race
Runners begin at the Brooklyn entrance of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, following the path FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller took toward the World Trade Center after the tunnel was closed. The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk takes place in New York City annually on the last Sunday of September. It is a large-scale 5K, not a small club race, with participation nearing 40,000.
The course proceeds from the Battery Tunnel entrance in Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan, concluding near the former Twin Towers location. Siller had completed his shift when he learned a plane struck the north tower. He drove toward the tunnel, donned approximately 60 pounds of equipment, and proceeded on foot, perishing while attempting to rescue others. The event commemorates the FDNY firefighters, law enforcement officers, and civilians lost in the attacks, with its proceeds benefiting Tunnel to Towers Foundation initiatives for wounded first responders and service members.
