About this race
The Virginia Creeper Marathon is a small spring marathon held on the Virginia Creeper Trail in Abingdon, Virginia. It begins and ends near the Abingdon Trailhead at Green Springs Road. The State of Franklin Track Club organizes this race, which is intentionally low-key and low-frills, featuring a low entry fee. The field on race day might be limited to 100 participants.
The course follows the Virginia Creeper Trail, a former railroad bed offering a soft surface, gradual slopes, and wooden trestles. Participants complete two out-and-back segments, passing the Watauga Trailhead multiple times and the Alvarado Station Trailhead twice. This setup provides convenient spots for family and friends to observe, cheer, and take pictures. Aid stations are positioned every 3 to 3.5 miles, supplying water, sports drinks, snacks, and homemade treats. Runners on race day will receive a keepsake. Prizes are awarded to the top male and female finishers, as well as to winners in each age group.
