About this race
The Wilderness Road Marathon traces the footsteps of pioneers like Isaac Shelby and William Whitley along the Historic Wilderness Road. Whitley's property west of the Alleghany Mountains became legendary when he ran his horse races counter-clockwise, opposing British custom. Today, North American racing follows his lead. This year, the marathon celebrates the USA's 250th anniversary and honors the US Marine Corps, especially Anthony Gale, a former Commandant from this region.
