About this race
WinterRock begins and ends at the Outlet Channel Shelter on Elk City Lake, near Independence, Kansas, offering 12K and 25K trail races during winter. This is a technical trail event, primarily on single-track. Participants can also use the 25K as the initial segment of the FlatRock Triple Crown, which includes the FlatRock 101K and FlatRock 50K, totaling 176K.
The course follows an out-and-back route along the Elk River Hiking Trail, crossing forests, limestone bluffs, rock formations, and offering open vistas of the lake region. The race maintains a rugged, "Fat-Ass" style: aid stations are unmanned and provide only water, requiring runners to carry their own bottles or handhelds as it is cup-free. Trekking poles are permitted, leashed dogs are welcome, and the finish is straightforward, featuring shirts, medallions, and post-race Frito chili pie.
