About this race
The Wolverine State 100 is an October ultramarathon series in northern Michigan, centered on a 100-mile crossing of the Lower Peninsula from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. The primary 100-mile race begins in Petoskey and concludes in Alpena. Accompanying it are 100K, 50K, and 100-mile relay options. The 100K also finishes in Alpena, while the 50K follows an out-and-back course from Alpena for those seeking a shorter ultra with more lenient cutoffs.
The course incorporates singletrack trails, gravel roads, limestone paths, and seasonal backroads, offering variety beyond a road ultra without exclusively targeting experts. Aid stations are positioned every 5 to 8 miles, and the 100-mile cutoff stands at 33 hours. Teams have the option to divide the full peninsula route in the relay. Solo 100-mile finishers completing the course in under 24 hours are presented with special awards. This event, in its early stages, is designed to make a long, point-to-point Michigan ultra accessible for strong first-time participants and experienced runners aiming for a quick time.
