About this race
The York 38 Special is an annual August mountain bike fundraiser in York, Montana. Proceeds support York Fire Rescue and the local volunteer fire department. The event uses public lands in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, operating under a Helena Ranger District permit. Riders choose from three main routes: the 38-mile Trout Creek route, the more challenging Bear Trap version, or the Spirit of 76, which is double the Trout Creek course. The Lucky 13 offers families a shorter out-and-back ride to Vigilante Campground. Starts are staggered throughout the morning, with main rides departing earlier and Lucky 13 riders starting later.
The riding terrain includes gravel, asphalt, dirt roads, and single track in the Big Belt Mountains. The 38-mile routes ascend at least 3,000 feet, feature mountain overlooks, traverse rugged canyons, and involve creek crossings. Trout Creek route riders go through Trout Creek Canyon, while Bear Trap adds 1,000 feet of climbing on rough single track before descending 2,000 feet to York Road. Six aid stations are positioned along the routes, staffed by volunteers and emergency medical personnel, offering local food and homemade items. Organizers advise against bringing dogs, a practical note regarding the terrain, crowds, and backcountry logistics.
