The Handewitter Sommerlauf is a summer race day held at the Wikinghalle in Handewitt, with the start and finish located in the same area. It includes more than just a main run: children can participate in the 400 m Bambini run, and older runners have options of 2.5 km, 5 km, 10 km, a half marathon, relay races, Nordic Walking, or a wheelchair race. The routes are measured by the German Athletics Federation, maintaining a proper racing standard while retaining a local club event atmosphere.
The courses traverse Handewitt, bringing together beginners, regular club runners, wheelchair athletes, walkers, children, families, and company or school groups within the same program. The race is organized with Handewitt SV, with support from Raiffeisenbank, and relies on numerous volunteers for route guidance, safety, supplies, catering, and general assistance. Previous editions attracted approximately 1,200 participants and over 4,000 guests, yet the organizers still characterize it as sporty and family-oriented, featuring a village atmosphere, a spectator program, and some long-standing participants.
