The Peak District Challenge’s Gold Ultra is a 100km team race from Hathersage, starting at 9pm on Friday night. It is built for fit, experienced trekkers or runners, with 2900m of ascent and enough darkness that night navigation experience is essential.
The Gold route links checkpoints by way of high points and viewpoints, so the distance is only part of the job; there is a lot of climbing. To finish inside the 24-hour target, teams need to average more than 4kph, and anyone who misses a cutoff can still continue on the 75km Silver route, which uses the shortest and flattest line between checkpoints. Entrants get detailed route information seven days before the event.
