Naples

Running in Naples is defined by Mount Vesuvius: the Naples Marathon and Maratona di Napoli use the volcano's lower slopes and coastal roads, mixing sea-level stretches with sharp elevation gains. The city itself is compact and hilly, but most road runners use the seafront promenade along the Bay of Naples or train inland toward the Vesuvius foothills where the volcanic terrain gives serious hill work. Cyclists have it better—the Vesuvio Gravel is a 370km epicgravelquest around the volcano and south into the Amalfi region, while the Gran Fondo Maratona del Matesannio heads toward the Sorrento Peninsula; both exploit the dramatic limestone and volcanic topography within 30–50km of the city.
