Raptor 5K
The Raptor 5K utilizes Lake Lure Classical Academy’s cross-country course, making it a school-based trail race rather than a road 5K with some dirt sections. It takes place in October in Lake Lure, North Carolina. The 5K trail run begins at the academy, and a shorter fun run shares the same finish area. This race is part of the ROC Race Series and provides outdoor recreation and adventure equipment for LLCA students in 4th grade and older.
The 5K course winds through sections of the LLCA campus, Dittmer-Watts Nature Trails, and the Lake Lure Greenspace. Its technical footing is substantial enough that pets and strollers are prohibited. Age groups range from young children to over 70, with a reduced entry rate for runners aged 18 and under. The field is designed for families, students, and local trail runners. The event was initially planned for an earlier date but had a previous edition canceled due to Hurricane Helene, leading to its first running being part race day and part a community restart for the school.
Walk A Mile in THEIR Shoes 5K Walk/Run
Run for Outreach - Tryon Half Marathon and Fall for the Foothills 5K
Run for Outreach combines the Tryon Half Marathon and the Fall for the Foothills 5K at Tryon International, a large equestrian property in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The half marathon covers 13.1 miles and the 5K covers 5 kilometers. Both races function as a fundraiser for Outreach and are presented by Ashworth Financial. It is a fall event with a small-field atmosphere; the most recent race had 52 runners in the half marathon and 21 in the 5K.
The half marathon course consists mostly of packed dirt and gravel, offering a softer surface than a road race without being a full trail run. The route runs alongside a river and through Tryon's horse country, with Tryon International's arenas, stables, riding trails, and open grounds defining the setting. Participants who have returned for the race often mention the post-race breakfast, which includes muffins, bagels, hot egg casseroles, and fruit. The race organizers have also noted the venue's 1,600-plus acres as space for potential route adjustments, an expanded committee, and a possible fun run.
Gold Mine River Run 5K
The Gold Mine River Run 5K is an off-road race held in the Vein Mountain area of Marion, North Carolina, south of Glenwood. The race is centered on Lucky Strike Drive and follows a cross-country style route on unpaved ground, offering a more natural surface than a typical road 5K.
The course avoids paved roads and focuses on a single 5K distance. Registration is open to the public for a fee. All finishers receive medals, and race shirts are available to the first 30 registrants.
Ruby C. Hunt YMCA Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run
The Ruby C. Hunt YMCA Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run is a Thanksgiving morning race in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, designed for families to be active before the holiday meal. The primary event is a 5K run or walk, complemented by a kids’ half-mile fun run for younger participants and a Phantom Runner option for those wishing to support the event without running the course.
The 5K begins at the LYCC of Gardner-Webb University and proceeds through Boiling Springs. Proceeds benefit the YMCA’s We Build People Scholarship Fund, assisting individuals needing financial aid to access YMCA programs.
Jingle Bell Rockin' Run
The Jingle Bell Rockin' Run is a Saturday morning 5K run/walk held in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. A Kids Fun Run is offered concurrently with the main event. The race begins at First Baptist Church on West Kings Street and is organized as a family gathering, not exclusively for competitive runners.
Pets and strollers are permitted, allowing families to include children, dogs, and walkers on the course. Proceeds benefit the Cleveland County YMCA's “We Build People” scholarship fund, linking the holiday run to local YMCA programs throughout the year.
One Epic Run
One Epic Run centers on the Memorial Day Mile, a downhill competitive mile in Columbia City, Indiana. The race starts in downtown Columbia City, runs point to point along Van Buren Street, and finishes at the Whitley County YMCA. It is tied directly to Memorial Day morning, with the mile kicking off the Annual Memorial Day Parade.
The Memorial Day Mile began as a tradition started by the Bird family, and Epic Racing Events now carries it forward. Epic Racing Events was founded by Mike Else, a Fort Wayne runner and endurance athlete who began racing in 2003 and has run everything from 5Ks to 100-mile ultramarathons. The event comes out of the Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana running community, with a simple hook: a fast downhill mile before the parade rolls through town.
Hartness Half Marathon & 5K
The Hartness Half Marathon & 5K takes place on the Hartness property in Greenville, South Carolina, situated near Pelham Road and Interstate 85. Participants can choose between a half marathon or a 5K. The course incorporates varied terrain beyond typical road miles, including pavement, trails, dirt roads, gravel roads, and grass fields.
The route crosses the Hartness property and extends into its nature preserve, offering a mixed-surface run distinct from conventional city road races. The surfaces are maintained well, making the event accessible for beginners yet providing sufficient variety for competitive runners. The event has partnered with Set Up Events and has contributed to local causes such as Make-A-Wish South Carolina and A Child's Haven.
Be the Light 5K
The Be The Light 5K is an evening December race based at McNair Stadium, with packet pickup and on-site registration there before the start. The main event is a 5K run/walk that starts at 6:30 PM EST, and a Fun Run follows five minutes later.
The race is set up for both competitive runners and families: youth 12 and under have their own lower registration price, and the Fun Run is a separate short option. The 5K uses gun-time scoring, with awards for the top three male and female overall finishers plus the top three in age groups from under 8 through 75+. A later December rain date is listed, and shirts are only guaranteed for early registrants.
Race for the Grasshopper 5K
21st Annual Bear Foot 5K and Half Mile Fun Run
The Bear Foot 5K begins and ends at Sunshine Elementary School in Bostic, North Carolina. It takes place each March to raise funds for K-5 students. This community 5K includes chip timing and a free half-mile run or walk for children in fifth grade and under. A Phantom Runner option is available for those who wish to support the school without participating in the run.
The 5K course is largely flat and out-and-back, conducive to fast times; the course records are 16:56 for men and 18:46 for women. Early registrants receive the event’s popular hoodie or shirt preference. Local runners can pick up their packets early. Awards are generous for a school race, with trophies for the top three overall male and female finishers and medals for many age groups, followed by an awards ceremony in the school gym. The event proceeds rain or shine, and pets are not permitted.
