À propos de cette course
The Mount Hood Nutcracker Challenge is a December cross-country race held at Mount Hood Golf Course in Melrose, Massachusetts, beginning on the Slayton Road side of the property. The primary race covers approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km), with a shorter 3.2 km alternative and a non-competitive 2-mile walk for those preferring not to race the full course. This is not a flat road race; the golf course terrain includes grass, hills, varied footing, and sufficient climbing to create an uneven pace.
The course layout varies annually, but a consistent pattern emerges: an accessible, mostly flat opening mile transitions into a more challenging middle section, followed by a finish requiring runners to ascend another hill before leveling out. Participants compete individually or in teams, with strong showings from clubs like the Central Mass Striders, Cambridge Running Club, and Cambridge Sports Union. Prizes are nutcrackers, some participants wear seasonal attire, and the December timing lends the event a club cross-country atmosphere rather than a formal city race.
