Commonwealth Park and the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin provide Challenge Canberra with a distinct race-day layout: water, open roads, and landmarks within sight. It is presented as the "ultimate introduction to long course racing," yet the setting feels demanding, with the Captain Cook Fountain, the Carilion, and Rond Terrace all forming the day’s scenery. The swim follows a large one-lap course, a benefit if you prefer not to be confined at the start. Following the swim, the bike route features "fast, flat, climbs, undulation," and the run is a quick, spectator-friendly circuit through Commonwealth Park and around the basin. Supporters can view athletes multiple times from the Rond Terrace event location.
