At the Best Centre in Mallorca, this is not open-water swimming; it is lane after lane in a pool until the walls start talking back. Open Water Swim is built around Ross Edgley’s attempt at the “longest distance swum in a pool in a week,” coming off the kind of background that includes Loch Ness and a swim around Great Britain in 158 days.
The work is blunt: “swim for an average of 15 to 18 hours per day,” then wake up and do it again. Sports scientists monitor him while he tests the “upper limit of what the human digestive system can actually process,” which may be the real race here: “can you keep eating and keep moving forward.” Expect “suffering, but for a noble cause,” and the mental grind of learning to “feel like a goldfish” without stopping.
