Cross de la Ballena, also known as Oteizako Krosa, is a cross-country race held on Christmas Eve in Oteiza, a small town near Pamplona in Navarra. It follows a mountain style, featuring significant climbs and descents along paths in the hills surrounding the town, rather than a flat park course. Participants can select between a short 5.5 km race, completing one lap of the circuit, or a long 11 km race, which involves two laps.
The race begins and concludes in Oteiza, lending it a local atmosphere, yet the participation numbers ensure both distances offer a competitive field. The short race concluded with 135 finishers, comprising 90 men and 45 women. Andoni Acebedo secured first place overall, and Karmele Garaioa was the first woman to finish. The long race saw 94 finishers, predominantly men, with Ion Sola claiming victory. Its unique characteristic is its Christmas Eve timing, presenting a demanding, undulating cross-country run in the mountains before the evening's holiday festivities commence.
