The Irati Trail begins deep within the Irati Forest in the Navarrese Pyrenees, not from a town square, lending the race a remote atmosphere from the outset. The primary mountain race spans 30 km with 2,000 m of elevation gain, commencing and concluding at the Abodi Mountain Center. It ascends Orhi, a 2,017 m peak and the western Pyrenees' first 2,000-meter summit. The event also features shorter races of approximately 23.5 km and 13 km starting from Casas de Irati. The shorter route involves 800 m of climbing, while the longer option gains about 1,400 m.
The courses traverse forest trails within one of Europe’s largest and most intact woodland expanses, operating between approximately 800 and 1,300 m in altitude for the shorter distances. Participants will pass landmarks like the Irabia reservoir, the Akerreria viewpoint, and the Casas de Irati area. Consequently, the race emphasizes the journey through the forest as much as the finish. It is suited for trail runners seeking genuine climbing, mountain terrain, and a more secluded Pyrenean environment over a race centered on a town or road.
