KV Aznaitín is a steep mountain-running series in Sierra Mágina, Jaén, built around Pico Aznaitín and the villages of Albanchez de Mágina, Jimena, and Torres. The main vertical kilometer sends runners up nearly 1,000 meters in less than 3 km, so this is short-distance racing with a very hard climb rather than a long trail day. The event runs in early November and also includes mountain races at marathon, sky race, and open distances.
The Open race starts in Jimena and finishes at the Ermita de Cánava, a little over 11 km later, with about 500 meters of climbing, 453 meters of descent, three aid stations, and a 2 hour 30 minute limit. The vertical race sits inside the Andalusian Vertical Race Championship and Cup, serves as the cup’s final test, and is also listed in the National League. Cadets get a shorter 1.5 km course with 400 meters of gain, while the absolute men’s and women’s podiums receive cash prizes. The wider Aznaitín 360 weekend adds Mountain 360 talks in Torres on mountaineering, health, and sport, so racers and locals get more than just the start line and finish line.
