Sauta Roc begins in the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, located approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Montpellier in the Hérault region. This trail race offers two course options, featuring a 26 km Trail XS route that includes 1,200 meters of elevation gain. The event holds the French athletics federation’s Bronze Trail label, catering to both seasoned trail runners and those seeking their initial substantial off-road competition.
Both courses commence from the center of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. The initial 2 kilometers traverse the village before participants transition onto the trails. Subsequently, the race follows wild paths and GR routes, incorporating three mountain passes, cliffside sections, and expansive vistas of the surrounding landscape. The event possesses a considerable history, and its draw is evident: a concentrated mountain-style race originating from a renowned stone village, rapidly ascending into the rugged terrain of the Hérault.
