Trail de Montgailhard is a June trail-running event held in Montgailhard, a commune in Ariège, Occitanie, situated below Foix and bordering the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Natural Park. The event typically features multiple distances, ranging from a shorter nature course of approximately 10 km to longer mountain routes of 21 km and 40 km, and accommodates walkers. The elevation gain is significant: the 10 km route involves around 450 m of ascent, the 21 km about 1,200 m, and the 40 km approximately 2,200 m.
Starts and finishes are located in Montgailhard. The courses traverse trails around Montgailhard, Soula, and Foix, passing notable points like Pic de l'Aspre, Cap de Touron, and Roc Negre. Local features such as Le Pech, Pain de Sucre, and the Pic are important to the Montgailhardais, especially as reaching their summits offers a complete panoramic view. The race originated from Sport Nature Montgailhard, a club established by friends seeking local running opportunities, social connection, and relaxation. The club now boasts over 100 members, conducts regular training, includes a cycling section, hosts the June trail race, and organizes a November night race. The club's ethos is straightforward: run together, then share a post-race beer.
