Ultra Trail Gran Sasso Asso is a mountain trail series held in Pietracamela, Abruzzo, Italy, near Gran Sasso. The race offers three distances: a 16.6 km Pietracamela Trail, a 25.6 km Tre Rifugi Skyrace, and a 62.6 km ultra. These are not flat or fast road races; the routes traverse rugged mountain terrain, requiring runners to manage elevation, footing, and pace changes.
The course begins on the Teramo side of the massif, entering an alpine environment with protected nature, high peaks, forests, meadows, and exposed ridges. The ascents are challenging, and the descents demand caution over speed. The participants are typical trail runners: those with packs, poles, and the mountain awareness to navigate the terrain.
