In Tromsø, situated nearly 70 degrees north, runners gather in early January despite the sun remaining below the horizon. PolarNight Marathon Tromsø stands as Norway's largest winter race, offering four distances: the certified Ishavskraft Marathon, the Polar Night Half Marathon, the 10 km Mørketidsmila, and the 5 km Mørketidstrimmen. Notably, the half marathon holds the distinction of being the northernmost AIMS-certified half marathon globally.
The races take place during the day, yet the illumination is a polar-night blue, not daylight. The course is marked by candles, streetlights, and torches, with the northern lights occasionally visible overhead. Approximately 2,000 participants travel from Norway and other countries, with previous events drawing individuals from numerous nations. Spectators line the streets despite the winter darkness, and each finisher is awarded a medal featuring a unique design for every edition.
