Stoltzekleiven Opp takes runners up a steep staircase in Bergen, beginning at Fjellveien and ascending the Stoltzekleiven steps. It is a brief uphill race, approximately 1 to 1.1 km long. The primary difficulty is vertical, with the course gaining 301.44 meters and featuring around 800 steps, including the historic Stoltzekleiven staircase which has 722 steps. Varegg sports club hosts it annually in September, with starts distributed across Friday and Saturday on the final weekend of the month.
The event has been held since 1979 and is noted as the world's largest uphill race, attracting about 6,300 registered participants in recent years. It accommodates more than just swift climbers; individuals and teams participate. The two-day start period ensures continuous activity on the staircase from morning until early evening. The format is straightforward, demanding, and distinctly local: reach the summit of Stoltzekleiven from its base as fast as possible.
